right these are the bands i see as most important to come out of britain in terms of influence, success, music, i dont particulary like one of the bands but they are relavent to british music but which is the best ? heres my thoughts
beatles: the originals, the innovators,an amazing band in terms of songwriting and unique sounding some of the greatest pop songs ever, could have been greater if they had the technology some of the bands have now,3 great songwriters, vocalists, musicians
radiohead: a great band witha unique sound one of the greatest vocalists around ever, greenwood is a great guitarist the rest are solid possibly the best experimenting band on this list
blur: eqaul to beatles in songcrafting imo a band who constantly reinvented themselves and each song/album sounded diff from the last g coxon is possibly the most underrated guitarist ever and damon albarn is a songwriting genius with blur and with his side projects
the smiths: probably the greatest band at writing sad angsty
songs and making people relate to it morrisey/marr are second only to lennon/mccartney in songcrafting imo and marrs guitar work along with morrisey ott voice makes them a one and only band
oasis: personally i cant get it they have some great stuff from definitly maybe(singles) and one or two from wtsmg but really i cant see the appeal but they are as influential than all these bands and desrve to be in this poll
ive left some great bands out like queen and led zep …… i made this purely from an indie side of things cheers
CRITERIA:
–Must have been around for at least three years,
–And/or made an incredible album that just didn’t get it’s due
–They must have signed with at least some sort of label, preferrably at least an indie with some hope of getting national sales
There are probably some exceptions to the criteria, but try not to say things like “my band that never got a chance” when you really mean “my band that played one time at my sister’s graduation party in 1988″.
My nominations:
Adam Again (Especially their second to last album Dig)
Never respected because they were signed to a “Christian” label, so they got lumped in with some garbage music. More similar in sound to a harder edged R.E.M..
Stone Roses
Well known in some circles, but though their first album blows away anything by Oasis or even newer bands like Jet (they shouldn’t really be in the conversation) and even the Strokes or Kaiser Cheifs, many haven’t even heard of them!
Sorry, My Chemical Romance would not count in this category as they’ve had two huge selling albums in the past few years. I;m torn about Franz Ferdinand –their first album seemed huge (Take Me Out was even included on Madden ’04), but what was it huge in comparison to? If it was huge according to indie/alternative/underground type stuff, then on the music radar as a whole it wasn’t as big.
UFO–I remember a song of theirs, I can’t recall the album, but the song I think was called Anyday: “Anyday, anyday I’ve got to get up and go”. Good song.
Great suggestions–but ARS did have “Imaginary Lover” and “So Into You”–two great songs. Modest Mouse has at least hit minor with “Float On”.
Which brings up a good point–even though a band may have had a hit or two they can still be overlooked, because hits usually disappear from the radar as quickly as they appear. Remember Golden Earring? They had “Radar Love” I think sometime in the 70′s, then had their only other hit in, what, ’85? I know that other than that they had/have a loyal following.
I was listening to OK computer and What’s the story morning glory, the other day and I was wondering what was your best album of the 1990s
On the TV channel “The Hits” on freeview at times they have a section called “Mashed Hits” they have like 2 pop songs mixed together, so like say Eminem with Kylie. I really like the songs but, where can I get that type of stuff from? Are there any albums? Or can I download it from somewhere? Or is there a DJ who does a lot of this type of stuff? I have “mashed” and “the mash up mix” which are both really good but stick to more new chart stuff. On the hits its more like greenday, oasis, no doubt, loads of really random stuff. My fav has to be George Mcihael “Faith” with Missy Elliotts “get ur freek on” Its really good!
